Kortix vs Perplexity Computer: rent a hosted worker, or own the open-source system?

Perplexity Computer is a closed, hosted digital worker; Kortix is open source, self-hosted or managed, with the whole system in one repo you own.

Perplexity Computer is a capable hosted digital worker; Kortix is the open-source system a team can own and run itself. Both take a goal and return finished work on a computer that is not your laptop. The difference is where the work lives and who controls the models and the machine underneath.

What Perplexity Computer is great at

Perplexity describes Computer as a general-purpose digital worker that operates the same interfaces you do, one that creates and executes entire workflows capable of running for hours or even months (Perplexity).

  • Subagents, running in parallel. You describe an outcome, and Computer breaks it into tasks and subtasks and spins up subagents for research, documents, data processing and API calls. Perplexity says you can run dozens of them at once.
  • A real environment per task. Every task runs in an isolated compute environment with a real filesystem, a real browser and tool integrations (Perplexity).
  • Multi-model orchestration. One frontier model carries the core reasoning while subagents are routed to the model that fits each job, and Perplexity can change that roster as models improve.
  • Managed, so there is nothing to run. Computer is included on Perplexity's Pro and Max plans and works on desktop, mobile, Slack and Microsoft 365, with hundreds of connectors (Perplexity pricing).

Max is $167 per month billed annually and carries 10,000 Computer credits a month (checked October 2026). A local build, Portable Computer, runs the orchestrator, the subagents and the harness on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with 24GB of VRAM or more, keeps work on the device, and asks before a task goes to a cloud model (NVIDIA).

Where a hosted worker stops for a team

Computer is closed and hosted, and that shape brings limits once more than one person depends on it.

  • You cannot read, fork or self-host the runtime. It runs in Perplexity's cloud, with a local build for one class of hardware. There is no version your team hosts on its own network.
  • The model stack is Perplexity's call. You can pick a model for a subtask, but Perplexity decides which models are in the stack and swaps them as it likes.
  • Configuration lives inside their product. Skills and connectors are set up in Perplexity's app, where your team cannot version or review them as files.
  • Access is a rented seat. Computer comes with a Perplexity subscription, and there is no free path to run the whole system yourself.
  • Your files and memory stay on their side. Documents, memory and tool credentials live in Perplexity's environment.

None of these are flaws for the product Perplexity Computer is. They are why it works with no setup at all.

What Kortix gives instead

Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: your agents, their skills, your company memory, and every connector in one git repo you own. One isolated sandbox per session, each with its own branch, and session work reaches main through a change request you review. Merge is default-deny for agents, so a session's work lands only when a person approves the diff.

The parts are files your team can read. Agents and skills are markdown, the rules that govern them sit in kortix.yaml beside them, and the source is open to read, fork and audit.

# Install the CLI
curl -fsSL https://kortix.com/install | bash
# Scaffold a project: kortix.yaml plus your agents, skills and runtime config
kortix init
# Push the repo and bring it live
kortix ship

You bring any model provider with your own keys, or the ChatGPT plan you already pay for, and pick the model per agent, per session or per message. Connectors reach 3,000+ apps plus MCP, OpenAPI, Postman, GraphQL and raw HTTP, and connector credentials are brokered server-side so they never enter the machine. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network, and self-hosting is free. The full capability list is at Kortix on GitHub.

Where Perplexity Computer wins

A team that wants a worker running today with nothing to operate should start here. Perplexity hosts the environment and keeps it consistent, ships a browser and a large connector library, and manages the model roster for you. Portable Computer lets a person keep sensitive work on a fast local GPU and escalate only the tasks that need frontier reasoning. For a solo operator or a small team that would rather not run infrastructure, that is a good trade.

When to pick which

Pick Perplexity Computer if you want a managed digital worker with nothing to set up and you are happy on Perplexity's plans.

Pick Kortix if you want the agents, the skills, the memory and the connectors as one system your team owns, can version, and can run on your own infrastructure, with any model and your own keys.
